DIY Washer & Dryer Maintenance Tips from the Pros
At Forrest Appliance Repair, we believe in helping our customers extend the life of their appliances – whether we’re on the job or you’re tackling things at home. Here are some easy, effective tips to keep your washer and dryer working their best. With ALL these tips, the most important one is that you should never keep using an appliance that has any sort of issue because it will turn into a more costly repair in the future. So be sure to call us right away so we can take care of the underlying issue!
Washer Maintenance Tips
- Clean the Dispenser Drawer: Remove and rinse the detergent drawer monthly to prevent buildup from liquid detergent and softener.
- Check for Leaks: Inspect hoses for bulges or cracks. Replace if you see signs of wear-ideally every 3-5 years.
- Run a Cleaning Cycle: Use a washer cleaning tablet or run an empty cycle with hot water and white vinegar every 3 months to remove mildew and residue. Make sure it’s white vinegar, because brown vinegar will stain the tub.
- Leave the Door Open: After each load, leave the washer door slightly ajar to prevent mold and odors from forming inside the drum.
Dryer Maintenance Tips
- Clean the Lint Trap: After every load, remove lint to prevent fire hazards and improve efficiency.
- 2. Deep Clean the Vent Hose: Every 6-12 months, disconnect the dryer vent and vacuum out built-up lint. This helps prevent overheating and extends the life of your appliance.
- Wipe the Drum: Use a damp cloth to wipe down the inside of your dryer every few weeks. This helps remove residue from dryer sheets or fabric softener.
- Check for Unusual Noises: Squeaks, thumps, or grinding can signal worn belts or drum rollers-time to give us a call if you hear anything out of the ordinary.
